67. Paul Bernardo Part 3

Monday Feb 20, 2023
Each time that we get to this point in a series on a killer, it is my favourite part. It is hard to read and research about the crimes that people committed and the lives that people ruined. With Paul Bernardo the list is extensive. He raped so many young women. He at least took part in the murders of three women and think of the mental torment that he has caused for families of his victims and even the torment that he has caused for police officers and investigators that he alluded for such a long time because of his charm and his narcissism. Thankfully though, his reign or terror would and did come to an end. In episode one, we talked about his young life and his crimes as The Scarborough Rapist. In episode 2 we covered the three murders as he became The Schooolgirl Killer. This week, we cover the fall of the monster.

Monday Feb 13, 2023
Last week we started our in depth look at the life and crimes of Paul Bernardo. Paul is one of the most known serial killers in Canadian history and his crimes are crimes that stick in the minds of anyone who was alive at the time that he was committing them. Last week, in episode 65 we talked about Paul’s childhood and we talked about Paul’s crimes that he committed as The Scarborough Rapist. This week we will move on to the crimes that Paul committed as his lusts and his deviancy grew, devolved and became even worse than they were before.

It is almost like within the true crime world there are categories for the men and women that are found guilty of being serial killers. We have the serial killers that are given more publicity, we have serial killers that are largely unknown and unheard of and then we also have some serial killers that just seem to grab the attention of the public at large. It could be fascination, it could be interest in learning more and it could also be attributed to when a serial killer is active and when they are caught, or not caught. This week we are going to start a series on one of Canada’s most notorious serial killers. He has been known as The Scarborough Rapist, he has been known as The Schoolgirl Killer and he has been known as the Ken in the Ken and Barbie Killers. His story is one of a man who had all the looks in the world and all of the charm in the world and he used it to ruin so many lives around him for a long period of time.

64. The Theresa Knorr Story

Monday Jan 30, 2023
Often times as we are growing up people tell us things like “it could always be worse” or they tell us that we are exaggerating our situations, but the reality is that sometimes there are stories going on like the one that we are going to talk about today. In the past we have talked about people in positions of power of people who have jobs that we entrust our children to, but this week we are going to talk about one of the worsts of the worst as far as crimes go in my mind. We are going to talk about a woman who was convicted of torturing and killing two of her six children while also using and abusing her other children to help and hide her crimes.

63. Anti-Hero Jason Vukovich

Monday Jan 23, 2023
True Crime gives us many examples of the anti-hero. The character that we find ourselves possibly rooting for, even though they do not possess or show the traits that are common in a hero. The anti-hero is not idealistic and certainly often works outside the boundaries of morality. Many of us think of people like Gary Plauché who killed his son’s kidnapper and molester in 1984. This week we are going to cover another person who was in that same vein. This man, in 2016 would track down a number of sex offenders by getting their information from the nation’s public registry on the matter. He would attack at least three men who had previously been convicted of sexual crimes and after being dubbed The Alaskan Avenger, he would eventually wind up behind bars.

62. The Disappearance of Angela Hammond
Monday Jan 16, 2023
Monday Jan 16, 2023
On April 4th of 1991 a young, 20-year-old woman was stopping at a payphone to call her fiancee to let him know that she was too tired to meet up for their plans and that she was instead going to head home for the night to rest and sleep. While she was still on the phone with her boyfriend she would be grabbed and kidnapped. This case had some interesting turns along the way and is still technically unsolved even though in 2021 a new theory came about.

61. The Bystander Effect - Kitty Genovese
Monday Jan 09, 2023
Monday Jan 09, 2023
If you have ever taken a psychology class or really, if you are a fan of true crime, at some point in your life you have probably come across The Bystander Effect. The Bystander Effect is a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim of a crime when there are other people present. They believe instead that someone else must have called authorities or someone else will help. This theory is actually largely based on the murder of Kitty Genovese and we are going to change a lot of what you may know or may have been taught about that case here today. Lost in all of the controversy that has surrounded that over the years, is a story of a woman that was brutally murdered, regardless of the circumstances that surrounded that murder.

60. The Death of Lucas Shortreed
Monday Jan 02, 2023
Monday Jan 02, 2023
Stories that are unsolved are terrible, there is no denying it. As we have said many times in the past on our show, we wonder how people can possibly live with themselves when they take a life. On October 10th, 2008 that is precisely what happened. A young man, 18 years of age, was walking home on a country road when he was struck by a vehicle and left for dead on the side of the road. It took 14 years for arrests to be made in this case, but currently it looks like there may be light at the end of a long tunnel for the family, at least in terms of answers. This week we cover what happened in 2008, what happened in between and what is currently happening now within the case.

59. The Disappearance of Elisa Lam
Monday Dec 19, 2022
Monday Dec 19, 2022
On February 19th, 2013 a body would be found inside a large cistern on the roof of the Stay on Main hotel in downtown Los Angeles in the United States of America. Now, over 9 years later, many would say that there are plenty of mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding the case. This death has been called back to in pop culture many times over the years and in fact bore a lot of similarities to the horror movie Dark Water which actually came out many years before the death, in 2005. This week we will talk about the girl at the center of the story, the hotel itself, the video that was later released to the public, The Elevator Game and some of the theories that have popped up over the years.

58. The Unsolved Murder of Sonia Varaschin
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Murder in a small town is something that is supposed to be rare. However, when it does happen generally the cases do not remain open for too long because in a setting like that, most everyone knows one another and there are clues, eye witnesses and mistakes. This week we are going to look at a case though that took place in Orangeville, Ontario in 2010. At that time, the population was roughly 27 thousand people. Now, 12 years later, sadly, this case remains open. To this day, very little information is known as to what happened, including the details surrounding how a young nurse died. Today, we will look at what details there are on the case in the hopes of helping to find some answers. GBNF on PatreonGBNF on FacebookGBNF on XGBNF on InstagramGBNF on YouTubeGBNF on TikTok

Gone, But Never Forgotten
GBNF is a True Crime Podcast that covers mostly Canadian stories. We cover murders, both solved and unsolved, missing person's cases and so much more. We also do Gone Travellin' episodes where we cover cases of true crime from other countries around the world.
You can follow along with our other "Goners" over on Patreon and support the pod at https://www.patreon.com/GBNFPodcast
At the end of every episode we like to share a #BeBetter story which are stories that are sent in by our listeners that show how people in the world around us go above and beyond to help out their fellow human beings. This is our way of giving some levity after some cases that are truly nothing but dark and dreary.
GBNF is written and produced by Lance Ryan and co-hosted by Lance and his lovely wife Julie Ryan.
