It is so easy to point fingers and poke holes in the ways that law enforcement, lawyers and the system deal with cases, criminals and victims. I have done it here on the show and people have likely been doing it since the advent of laws and punishments for crimes. One thing that most of us don’t lend enough credence to is the fact that it can be incredibly difficult to sift through the truths of multiple people in order to find the real truth or the closest thing possible. This week’s case is a shining example of that because there are stories of sexual assault, there is a murder and there are certainly a heap of mental health struggles that were diagnosed but not deemed to be a deterrent to the killer standing trial. There was a tonne of backstory to the case and in the end, perhaps, there are only two things to be taken from this case. One, the killer was a killer who held a grudge, let it fester and then lashed out in the worst way possible. Two, there are so many bad things that are done by people to other people and there are so many lies that a person can tell themselves over time but vicious, violent and premeditated murder is never the answer.Â

We live in a broken and increasingly broken world, of that there is little doubt when you take a look around yourself. You see mental and physical health struggles, you see death and assaults everywhere. Within our homes we see divorces, domestic assaults and even murder. I think for a lot of us true crime lovers out here, one of the most baffling things is when you hear about a parent taking the life of their own child or children. Sadly, I have covered that a lot on this podcast. There are many people who can have dark thoughts or even act out on awful things but from where I sit, it certainly takes an incredibly awful human being to be able to watch as the life leaves the eyes of their own flesh and blood. This week, we are going to talk about that. We are going to talk about a woman who admitted that her plan was double homicide and suicide when it came to her and her two children, but instead what it became was double homicide and 78 years in prison without the chance of parole.Â

Over six hundred thousand people go missing within Europe each and every year on average. Thankfully, many of those cases go resolved when the person in question is found by either the police, the family, or both. There are of course though plenty of cases that go unsolved for a time and plenty of cases that remain unsolved forever. This week we are going to look at a mysterious case where the missing person case went unsolved for thirty years until it was suddenly solved and under the strangest of circumstances. This case is certainly true, but we may never in fact know what, if any crime, was actually committed.Â

The foolish game goes by many names. In Canada we call it Ding Dong Ditch or Knicky, Knicky, Nine Doors. In The US it’s called Doorbell ditch and Ring and Run and in Europe it goes by names like Chapppy, Knock Off Ginger and more. Most people know the premise. You get dared by a friend to run up to a stranger’s house and either knock on the door or ring the doorbell and then you, and your amused friends, either run or you hide. On January 19th, 2020 in Corona, California some young teenaged boys were out celebrating a birthday when the group dared one of the friends to Ding Dong Dash at a home on Modjeska Summit Road. Little did they know that when they drove away from that home laughing and having a good time that their night and their entire lives were about to change forever.Â

No story that we could tell would be anything except for mortifying when it deals with the death, the kidnapping or the sexual assault of a child. This weeks case unfortunately deals with all three of those things and centers around a sexual predator who was known to police and who had served time previously for sexually assaulting minors. It took eight years and a lot of elaborate work for the police to finally get their man and hopefully this time he wont ever get out of prison, although, his sentence certainly does allow for it.Â

Something that I have talked about a lot on this podcast is the fact that I do believe that internet sleuths and podcasts like this one are something that can be an assistance to open cases. However, much on the flip side there are many, many times throughout history where we have seen that the victims of crimes and the families of victims of crimes can have their lives SEVERELY damaged and even ruined by people who are always quick to share their opinions and their guilty verdicts with the community at large. Many people think that is something that came around with the advent and the growth of things like social media, something that bonded people together over cases, both open and closed. However, as I am going to show you with this week’s case, onlookers sharing their opinions which in turn turned into rumours is something that predates the internet. In 1973 a group of five teenagers ventured into the forest for a fire and to smoke some marijuana when they were completely ambushed by three brothers. Four teenagers lost their lives that day and one girl survived. However what was clearly a blessing in her life would turn into a curse.Â

Have you ever hit that point in a case where you just go ick? What is it about a case that makes you realize that this one hits a little bit differently than the other ones? What is it that truly makes your skin crawl? For Julie, I know that it’s cases when children get hurt, kidnapped or murdered. That was a line in the sand for her. For me, it’s cases like this one. Grooming seems like such an insignificant thing when you talk about killers, when you talk about serial killers, when you talk about the things that I do on this podcast. Grooming though truly gets to me. When you hear of cases where it is evident that an adult grooms and takes advantage of a child those are the ones that really get to me. This week’s case has a man at the centre of it that seemed as though he knew how to manipulate everyone but he groomed two very young women for sure within his lifetime.

As someone who was attended church for most of his life and someone that was indoctrinated with the beliefs and the rules that come along with being a Christian I have seen many a marriage over my years start, finish and face a lot of tumultuous times because two people starting a life together become completely inundated with information and guidelines by everyone from every corner. You are told how to date, who to date, what to do and what not to do and you are constantly asked when the wedding is coming, even when the relationship is in it’s infancy. This week we are going to look at a case where all of that certainly at least weighed in a little bit and we may never know just how much Christian beliefs and Christian doctrine may have gotten into a new wife’s head to cause the untimely, devastating death of her husband and the need to try to cover up everything that she had done.Â

108. Serial Killer Joanna Dennehy
Monday Dec 04, 2023
Monday Dec 04, 2023
We have done a few episodes now on serial killers and we have previously done one covering a female serial killer. Today we are going to look at a case of a serial killer from The United Kingdom who is known now as “Britain’s Most Dangerous Female Prisoner”. Joanna Dennehy is one of only four women in the United Kingdom to ever have been sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning that she will be behind bars for the rest of her life. These are the most severe penalties that can be given in The U.K. and are dedicated to the worst of the worst of criminals. Joanna is certainly an incredibly evil woman; she is in jail for killing three men, attempting to kill two other man and she shows no remorse for the things that she has done nor the lives that she has taken or altered.Â

You can follow along with our other "Goners" over on Patreon and support the pod at https://www.patreon.com/GBNFPodcast
At the end of every episode we like to share a #BeBetter story which are stories that are sent in by our listeners that show how people in the world around us go above and beyond to help out their fellow human beings. This is our way of giving some levity after some cases that are truly nothing but dark and dreary.
GBNF is written and produced by Lance Ryan and co-hosted by Lance and his lovely wife Julie Ryan.
