97. The Hinterkaifeck Murders

Here on the podcast we have covered many cases that are unsolved and many cases that seem as though they COULD get solved if the right information or the right evidence came to light. Today we are going to climb into the way-back machine and head to 1920’s Germany though to take a look at what may be Germany’s most well-known unsolved murder. This week’s case has six murders, strange circumstances and absolutely no resolution. It has now been over one hundred years since this case took place so it’s obvious that the guilty parties, and anyone that knew who the guilty parties were first hand, are no longer with us. What we are left with is plenty of people of interest, plenty of people who believe that they know what happened and the hope that perhaps one day, someone will come forward with evidence that will at least let us know who was behind the horrifying story that wiped out an entire family.Â

It feels like since the dawn of time we have, as a society, tried to find ways to make ourselves feel better than others or tried to find ways to make others look worse than us. That shows itself in every kind of prejudice that we see around us in our every day lives. Unfortunately, if you know much at all about true crime you also know that this systemic way of thinking seems to creep into every single level of law enforcement that exists today. The reality is that much like most professions that exist today, law enforcement also is overworked and under paid. There simply are not enough people to look into all of the crime that exists and as such you tend to get things like we are going to talk about today. Certainly, there are more people at fault in this case than investigators but this case was picked up by Esquire Magazine in April 2016 for a reason. This case was covered because reporter Tom Junod presented that this case was a case where the person at the centre of the story did not trigger what is often called “missing white woman syndrome”. Instead, he attested that this case showed that even for young women that you would reckon would get a publicity storm around their cases, things like previous criminal records and things like drug addiction can turn the volume way down on a media storm. Intro Music: Provided by Gallagher MusicSocial Media for GBNF:GBNF on FacebookGBNF on TwitterGBNF on InstagramGBNF on TikTokGBNF on YoutubeGBNF on Patreon

One of the things that people complain about most within legal systems in their countries are the delays in the legal process that are brought on by endless paper-pushing, endless hurdles and what seems to amount to mindless defense in order to keep some of the worst criminals from the worst charges possible for the crimes that they have committed. Two of the defenses that are very contentious depending who you ask are the defenses to try and keep criminals out of jail or on lighter sentences because of mental health issues or because of drug or alcohol abuse. This week we are talking about a story where the culprit certainly had both in her past but the jury ruled that her past substance and mental health issues should not keep her from being held responsible for the disgusting acts that she committed against a man that she said that she loved.Â

So many nights on the town end with stories of merriment, joy and good times and yet at the same time there are many nights on the town that wind up with the complete opposite kinds of stories. When you add alcohol to a situation unfortunately the events of an evening can change at a moment’s notice. Sadly, no matter how you look at this week’s story it is one of those stories on the awful side of that spectrum. A group of friends heads out to the bar and one of those friends is never seen again. To make matters worse, now over twelve years later that night out is still the subject of a missing person’s case that is widely believed to be a homicide investigation as well. A case where it seems that a lot of people know what happened and yet no answers have been given to the family and no charges have been laid.Â

Certainly one of the most baffling crimes that you can learn about are the cases where parents kill their own child or children. It is hard enough to fathom that we live in a world where anyone believes that they can take a life, or lives, and they will get away with it or they simply do not care what the repercussions will be. When someone takes that awfulness to an entirely new level and takes the lives of their own offspring it certainly can shake you to the core. This week we are going to cover a story that has an incredible amount of awful, an incredible amount of weird and two people with a whole lot of death surrounding them.Â

As we have seen in the plethora of murder cases that we have covered on this podcast killers, and even serial killers, come in all shapes and sizes. There is no defining characteristic that is seen across the board in the case of all, or even most, killers. One of the things that is certainly seen in more murderers than not though is a progression in crime and another maddening trait that we come across far too often is that career criminals still find ways to slip through the cracks. Unfortunately this is not just new in cases that we see and hear today. This week we are going to go back a little bit to the 1980s and 1990s and we are going to look at the life, crimes and death of a female serial killer who was active in California and making victims out of people who needed help when they came to her, not to be hurt.Â

Children are our most important commodity. Full stop. We live in a world where it seems that everyone forgets that and our children are not as protected or as cherished as they should be. Far too often there are stories all over the news of children being beaten, kidnapped and killed and it seems that we have almost been desensitized to it on some level as a society. Sometimes our minds don’t even register how old the person is that we are talking about when we hear a new story. This week we are going to look at a story that covers MANY children and this story has everything. A hero, villains, heartbreak, freedom and so much more. Perhaps though, one of the worst parts of this story is the fact that even when you think that these children are out of harm’s way because they are freed from their captives…there are more to come. Our own governments and agencies that have been put into place to protect our children still sometimes don’t and this is one of those cases where it becomes clear as day that there are problems in our world in terms of criminals but there are also problems in our world with how we deal with tragedies like this one.

As our listeners who are in Canada would know, one of the things that is on the minds of many people who are into true crime, in this country especially lately, is the way that criminals are treated when in prison and the ways that they are sometimes seemingly lost in the system when they get out. In Canada we have recently had Paul Bernardo, a convicted serial killer and serial rapist, moved from maximum security prison to medium security prison because it was deemed as the logical next step according to what the goals are of the prison system in this country. We also have had the very recent case of a convicted sex offender and trafficker who was found to have been living on his wife’s property where she also ran a camp for children on the autism spectrum after he served his time and seemingly stopped facing as many checks and balances. Heck, we even had Karla Homolka years ago found to be working with a daycare because she was given an assumed name and a new life. This week we are going to look at the American equivalent, from within Ohio. In 2016 a vibrant 20-year-old woman was murdered by someone who had previously served only three years of a sentence for a previous, and similar crime. We are going to look at changes that happened far too late for the woman at the centre of our story and far too late to stop a monster from committing an eerily similar crime for a second time.Â

When we talk about killers there are always words and statements that seem to float around the killers themselves. Things like psychopath, sociopath, abuse, escalation of crime, lack of emotion and so on and so forth. But, if you are into the psychology of true crime you are very well aware of the fact that we barely know what makes a killer tick and we barely knows what causes something to one day change in their mind enough that they are capable of taking another life. For every pattern there are outliers, for every diagnosis there are people who are undiagnosable. We really do not know what it is within someone that makes them a) capable of being a killer and b) capable of killing.  This week we are going to look at a young man who made a 911 call after he murdered his mother and one of his sisters. In that call he had no emotion. He knew what he had done and seemingly knew where he was headed. It is chilling to hear the voice of someone who had just taken the lives of two members of his family. This case will chill you to your bones.Â

If you are listening to this podcast I reckon that that means that you have taken in your fair share of true crime in your life. You then know that nearly any podcast has taken the time to warn people against the pitfalls that can come in the world of online dating. Sites like Tinder and every other dating site that has popped up essentially have turned dating and hookup culture into a game of window shopping and movies and shows like the ones on The Tinder Swindler have shown the world that there certainly can be and are fears out there. This week we are going to cover another case that shows what can happen if you swipe and meet the wrong person online. Sadly, not everyone is as innocent as they appear and scarier than that many people are very good at creating fake personas to get what they want. Many of us have encountered our fair share of dirtbags in the dating world, whether online or offline, but sadly the gross comments and the disrespect for women is not the depths of the monsters that you can find if you aren’t extra careful. Sad but true. We live in a world where something as innocent as a date can turn into something as sinister as murder.

Gone, But Never Forgotten
GBNF is a True Crime Podcast that covers mostly Canadian stories. We cover murders, both solved and unsolved, missing person's cases and so much more. We also do Gone Travellin' episodes where we cover cases of true crime from other countries around the world.
You can follow along with our other "Goners" over on Patreon and support the pod at https://www.patreon.com/GBNFPodcast
At the end of every episode we like to share a #BeBetter story which are stories that are sent in by our listeners that show how people in the world around us go above and beyond to help out their fellow human beings. This is our way of giving some levity after some cases that are truly nothing but dark and dreary.
GBNF is written and produced by Lance Ryan and co-hosted by Lance and his lovely wife Julie Ryan.
